1. What is the Scientific Method?
From the video with Neil Tyson, in my opinion, the "scientific method" we can call every attempt of prooving if we are wrong, by veryfying our claim in a way, which shows the person - who in fact disagrees with us - that actually we are right. That is the best way to convince others to our arguments. The example of the scientific method is mentioned in the video itself. Neil is talking there about an incident in a coffee shop, when a waitor tries to show him that he is wrong in his claim, that whipped cream can't sink. Of course he didn't achive his goal, instead he prooved that it is Neil who is right.
2. Why do people believe in supernatural things like magic, astrology and ghosts these days, when they have science?
In my opinion there are two main causes:
The first one is the system, that has worked since the beginning of humanity. It is also a reason why something like religion exists. People try to explain things, they do not understand by their own imagination. So the fact is that there are many, many people on Earth, who do not understand science. They believe in things more logical and sensible to them, even if the truth is diffrent. Also they read Bible, Koran or Mahabharata without any interpretation. A person who doesn't know/understand physics, or the story of Universe, but thinks he/she understands the Work of Creation, will say that the Earth is flat, no matter if he/she has an access to true information or not.
The second reason is that these things (astrology, ghosts and magic) don't actually conflict with science. Laws of physics, Darwin's theory, or the story of existance, don't mean that magic, ghosts or CORRECTLY INTERPRETED religious texts are all nonsense. A person who does not believe in them, or most of them (like me) must admit that he has no evidence, that he is right, just like he has no evidence, that he is wrong. The scientific method wouldn't work in any way in this case.
Ad.2 How can you say that magic doesn't conflict with science? Science tries to explain events and magic, by definition, tries to make them look mysterious and hide their causes. The two are in obvious conflict.
